Inventing a courageous and daring legacy is no small feat. While reflecting on the achievements of 25 years, we are reminiscent of the more critical moments which will forever remain bitter-sweet and yet proudly conquered. The journey has been nothing short of exceptional and we want to take a moment to reflect on what has shaped us to be a distinguished brand on the global stage.
Resilience and Innovation
Deviating from the traditional style of South African wines in 1999 proved to be the very first obstacle we were determined to overcome. Albie Koch came to De Toren as winemaker at the youthful age of 22, bringing with him international winemaking experience. His avant-garde approach in the vineyard and cellar was initially received as unconventional in an established South African market. Rather than becoming discouraged or be swayed by the trends, he remained unwavering in his vision to craft wines that will be recognised amongst the world’s most premium blends. Today, the iconic De Toren Fusion V is a testament to the resilience of an ambitious young winemaker with an unrelenting commitment to the craft.
Commitment to Organic Farming
In 2015, we embarked on a journey to transition to 100% organic farming which required redirecting, adapting, and refining our farming practices. To change from commercial to organic farming is no simple step, as it requires removing the commercial protective measures the plant has become accustomed to such as pesticide sprays and fertilizer. In the conversion period, the plant must rebuild its immunity and develop resilience to naturally occurring factors in the vineyards and it is in this time that the risks are high. We wholeheartedly believed in our decision, and we reaped the rewards of our dedication to sustainability and soil health allowing us to produce wines that have more balance, elegance, and terroir expression.

Innovative Irrigation Strategies
Drip irrigation is a form of micro irrigation where small holes are made in the irrigation pipe at the base of each of the vines, allowing small allotments of water directly to each plant. This can conserve nutrients and water when implemented on a large scale. De Toren has always worked carefully with water as our farm receives 40% less water allocation than farms similar in size, considering this, an in-depth analysis on the influence of water restrictions on all components of the vineyard, during each stage of the growing season led to a succession strategy to prioritise hydration in certain areas of the vineyard. This allows the plants to function in an optimal state of balance to produce grapes with higher concentration of flavour. In 2016 when the 124-year record breaking drought as it was called, hit Stellenbosch, De Toren was ready to tackle this challenge with experience of water conservation tucked into our belts. While the crop yield was slightly less, the drought is recognised at De Toren as a period for producing exceptional quality wines.
Rebranding During a Global Crisis
With change on the horizon in 2019, De Toren underwent a subtle rebrand and carefully laid plans to renovate what was to become a modernised home; a space where guests can taste wine in our lounge and bask in the 180-degree view of False Bay. The onset of the global pandemic coincided with the plans, yet we remained steadfast in our vision and opened our doors in 2021. Our efforts were reaffirmed by the overwhelming enthusiasm and support from guests across the world.

As we celebrate our 25-year milestone, we look back with gratitude and forward with optimism. The lessons of resilience, adaptability, and perseverance continue to guide us as we strive for excellence in every bottle of De Toren wine.
Thank you for being part of our journey.
Warm regards,
