The 2023 vintage of Patronus has officially been released. It is a wine that stands as a powerful expression of our commitment to terroir, craftsmanship, and conservation. At De Toren, Patronus has always represented more than just a fine wine. Derived from the Latin for “patron”, the name reflects our enduring philosophy: to care for the land that sustains us and to honour our responsibility to preserve it for generations to come.
Sustainability remains a cornerstone of our philosophy, every step is guided by a deep respect for the land we call home. This commitment extends beyond winemaking, Patronus has become a proud symbol of wildlife conservation. Through our partnership with The Rhino Orphanage in Limpopo, proceeds from Patronus Malbec have supported the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned rhinos. With the release of Patronus 2023, this purpose-driven narrative continues, honouring both our environmental values and our passion for preservation.
A Season Defined by Precision and Patience
The 2023 growing season delivered conditions that were both challenging and serendipitous. An exceptionally cold and dry summer slowed the ripening process, concentrating the fruit and heightening flavour development. Thankfully, Malbec’s early-ripening nature meant that the grapes were harvested before late-season rains set in, preserving their pristine condition and full phenolic maturity.
The result? Small, flavour-packed berries with beautifully balanced acidity, giving rise to a wine of bold character and refined structure.
A Masterful Expression of Malbec
Blending is at the core of the 2023 vintage, composed of three distinct blocks, each contributing a unique element to the final expression. From vines over 27 years old that provide structure and complexity to those that bring the signature finesse that defines the Malbec, the result is a masterfully balanced blend, crafted to evolve beautifully over time.
Each component was selected for its ability to enhance the final blend, creating a wine that is both powerful and balanced.
Tasting Notes
On the nose and palate, Patronus 2023 reveals a spectrum of luxurious aromas and textures:
- Velvety tannins provide structure, while a long, lingering finish rounds off the experience with finesse and sophistication.
- Rich layers of dark fruit, succulent prune, and ripe blueberry lead the charge.
- A swirl in the glass unveils bright cherry notes, adding liveliness and energy.
- Subtle cedar, sweet spice, and vanilla from oak maturation weave throughout, enhancing the wine’s depth.
Crafted With Care
In just its third vintage, Patronus continues to evolve. Only four barrels were used in the creation of the 2023 vintage, each playing a critical role in shaping the final wine. This year, a single, intentional refinement to one barrel was made to capture the vintage’s full potential, a subtle but significant shift that enhances the wine’s harmony and depth.
While the 2023 vintage of Patronus offers immediate allure with its vibrant, fruit-forward profile, it was meticulously crafted with ageing in mind. For those who value the depth and complexity that time brings, cellaring it for at least seven years will allow its refined tannins and harmonious acidity to evolve to their fullest expression.
For the ideal pairing, opt for rich, roasted dishes with higher fat content, such as lamb shoulder or duck confit. The wine also holds its own alongside well-spiced cuisine, offering a captivating interplay of flavours and textures.
A vintage to be savoured and remembered for years to come.
