This year marked the 42nd anniversary of the Nederburg Auction, an exclusive opportunity for local and international buyers to purchase some of South Africa’s most rare and sought-after wines. We were honoured that 30 bottles of the De Toren Fusion V 2005 vintage was once again selected to be auctioned.

Compared to last year, the auction has seen a total of 11% increase in the overall participation. The rising appreciation of aged South African fine wine was also reaffirmed by a 23% spike in total sales, totalling to a mighty value of R7 593 200. This resulted in a record-breaking average of R740/l, the highest value per litre ever achieved across all major wine categories in the history of the auction.

The results established red wine as the top performing category with a 50% increase in the average price per litre to R961/l. The De Toren Fusion V 2005 was sold at an astounding R2166 per bottle, forming part of the top prices paid per bottle of wine at this year’s auction.

This year also marks the third consecutive year of no unsold lots, a testament to the quality of the wines and the appetite that exists for fine, mature South African wines. Wine expert, Tim Atkin urged the industry and its consumers to believe in the outstanding quality of South African wines and to never again underestimate it.
