We are thrilled to announce that our bespoke The Black Lion, hailed one of the most eminent and palatial 100% Shiraz wines to emerge from South Africa, is debuting its entrancing 2020 vintage pre-release.
Throughout De Toren’s continuous quest for experiencing the exceptional, The Black Lion has been the heirloom of years of winemaking. A testament to our winemaking team’s profound skill, passion and dedication.
With an extremely limited release of a mere 1162 bottles, this ultra-luxurious The Black Lion 2020 was crafted from the ancient soils of Africa and its exquisite, hand-crafted label ultimately pays tribute to the magnificent black-maned Cape Lions that once roamed this ancient land.
Cultivated from specially selected vines and nurtured by special hand manicuring, only four clusters of grapes are grown per vine to ensure that only the finest grapes are produced. These grapes are assembled from distinctly unique terroirs, namely the Swartland, contributing to the wine’s raw power and Stellenbosch, ensuring its unquestionable elegance.
The Shiraz grapes that make up The Black Lion 2020 were a bit smaller in size. But make no mistake, these Shiraz grapes are more powerful than ever! Full-bodied, with great depth – one can certainly expect some truly expressive flavours from this robust wine. Exceptionally multilayered with complex aromas of blackberry, spicy pepper notes and a hint of toasty cigar. On the palate, the wine has a firm yet elegant tannin structure showcasing concentrated purple, black fruit and wood delivered sweet spices which lures one into a long, intense finish. The Black Lion 2020 without a doubt shows great vibrancy, promising decades of drinking pleasure to follow.

Each of the mere 1162 bottles is individually labelled and numbered by hand, presented in a specially crafted, locked wooden display case and accompanied by an iconic De Toren key, ensuring the safekeeping of this wine. The Black Lion has an ageing potential of 40 years plus and if you can resist, it’s most certainly one for the collection.
