While tender-hearted to bid our highly rated De Toren Z 2017 vintage adieu, we are brimming with excitement to announce the launch of our 2018 vintage with a name worthy of its status.

It’s been 15 years of De Toren Z, the acclaimed Right-Bank Bordeaux styled blend of the estate, and the journey has been significant. With this new chapter, we wish to honour the history of our Merlot-driven blend while also paving the road golden for its future.

The inspiration behind De Toren Edition Z has been layered with a passion for fine art in the form of wine, a bit of Greek mythology and age-old Cape climate. Our Cape-Dutch roots adds the flair to the name, as “Zuidewind” in Dutch refers to wind from the South. The Merlot block is designed to receive the strong south-eastern wind from False Bay. Zephyrus, the god of wind according to Greek mythology, serves as further inspiration behind the characteristically charming “Z”, as it is affectionately referred to.

Not only is there new life blown into the name, but this will also be the very last 5-varietal “Z”. We are thrilled to present Edition Z 2018 with a few notes from Master of Wine, Greg Sherwood:

The wine displays lofty aromatics of raisined black cherries, wet tobacco, damson plums and dusty graphite with a sweet sandalwood kiss. The palate is rich and generous with a well-honed balance, a full and broad mouthfeel and seductive notes of mocha-laced blueberry, graphite and vanilla pod spice. The Merlot driven De Toren Edition Z blend is certainly one of the great revelations of the past decade of South African premium red winemaking delivering pure hedonistic palate pleasure with a Right-Bank Bordeaux philosophy.”
